The team at Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre are celebrating after they won two categories dedicated to improving patient service, at an awards competition open to thousands across the country.
The team won the Innovation & Improvement award, for their work pioneering one-day hip replacement surgery, and they also took the prize for Quality Champion, for their work in consistently striving to improve the working environment and the service to our patients.
Hospital Director Steve Booker said: “I am very proud of this recognition for our colleagues. They have worked hard, and use their skills and creativity to enhance patient treatment and wellbeing. Like everyone that works at the centre, they are dedicated and put the patient at the heart of all they do.”
The Innovation & Improvement award was lifted by Consultant Orthopaedic Lead Gyorgy Lovasz and Medical Director Marco La Malfa, representing the surgical team that created a unique pathway to carrying out hip replacement surgery as a day case operation.
Mr La Malfa explained: “We were all delighted when our names were announced at the ceremony. Just a few years ago patients could expect to be in hospital for four days while having a hip replaced. Innovation and new techniques reduced that to around two and a half days, but patients still didn’t like long stays. There is also a great deal of evidence to show they would recover better at home. By using different surgical and anaesthetic techniques, over several years, we reduced that time down until we were confident the operation could be safely carried out as a day case procedure.
“The option is not suitable for everyone but, for those who are suitable, feedback has been excellent, and the medical outcomes are no different from those staying overnight.”
Mr Lovasz said: “The feedback from patients, who have had the procedure, has been universally popular. People much prefer to be able to return home, if it is suitable, and the six-week review shows the results are every bit as good, but with higher levels of satisfaction.”
The centre took the Quality Champion award for its Circle initiative, which was formed in response to feedback from the staff. The Circle provides peer-to-peer support and has been very successful in boosting staff wellbeing, recruitment and retention.
Founder Alison Raven said: “Happier and more confident staff make for more positive outcomes for patients. Within the Circle, we discuss suggested topics or issues. We publicise the subjects so that people who are interested can attend.
“Staff from all areas, clinical and non-clinical, join in giving their points of views. The suggestions help us to find new ways of getting things done, gaining the very best results for all. The meetings not only make people feel valued and supported, but many of the ideas we have, and go on to implement, also enhance the patients’ journeys - from referral to completion of treatment - which makes us happy and proud of the work we have done.”
