My name is Laura Cowan and I am the Lead Radiographer for ST Mary’s NHS Treatment Centre and Havant NHS Diagnostic Centre both on the South Coast.
I have been in this role for 18 months and a Qualified Diagnostic Radiographer for 7 years. Prior to working for Care UK I worked in a District General Hospital and then spent 4 years working in a
major Trauma Centre as a Senior Radiographer.
There are two parts to my role... I spend the majority of my time as a Radiographer working in both centres. We are very busy and can see up to 100 patients a day in our x-ray departments. As a Radiographer I am responsible for justifying all x-ray requests, this means ensuring the request has relevant clinical indications, the correct x-ray examination has been requested, all the patient details are correct and that the Referrer has signed the request, and this is just step one! I then x-ray the patient, first of all checking that all their details are correct, that they know what they are having x-rayed and that they are happy to have the x-ray. Patients can be quite nervous when they come to us and one of the things I enjoy most about my job is being able to watch a patient who has walked in looking petrified, walk out with a smile on their face feeling at ease, this is my favourite part of the job.
I also have time that I dedicate to my role as Lead Radiographer. This was a brand new role that I was appointed to and I feel lucky that I have been given the opportunity by Care UK to take the role and develop it.
As Lead Radiographer I support the Diagnostic Imaging Manager with the running of the department and deputise for them when needed. I have developed a new updated set of Competencies for our Radiographers which have been shared with all Care UK Diagnostic departments, something I was particularly proud off.
Care UK have put me on several courses to help develop my management skills and a result I feel much more confident in my Lead role and I am excited to continue to develop my role and my team.
