Break in to prison healthcare...

Are you looking to work for a company that offers support and development opportunities? If so, then this could be the role for you!

Prison Healthcare Services within HMP Isle of Wight deliver healthcare services by Care UK. As the major independent sector provider of prison health services, there is a strong emphasis on partnership working between all the stakeholder organisations.

HMP Isle of Wight has a total prisoner population of around 1100 – held within two sites – Albany and Parkhurst.

What does the job entail?...

We have an opportunity for a Senior Staff Nurse in our Inpatient Healthcare Unit (IHU). The IHU provides care to prisoners with both mental and physical health problems, minor surgery, medical, rehabilitation/post operative care and palliative care. The Unit also provides a safe environment for the stabilisation and detoxification of prisoners with substance misuse problems.

Our Inpatient Healthcare Unit on the Albany site opened in October 2009 and continues to work on achieving its full potential in providing an equitable secondary care environment to patients within a prison environment.

With a normal operating capacity of 18 beds, the Unit caters for patients with physical healthcare needs, mental healthcare needs or a combination of both.

About the role...

The Unit nursing team works closely with our Prison GP Services and a dedicated team of prison officers who provide the safety, security and pastoral presence in the Unit, enabling nursing staff to focus on clinical care.

In addition to inpatient type care, the Unit also hosts a range of inreach and specialist services that currently includes:
• specialist mental health services
• retinal screening
• AA Screening
• Podiatry
• Dietitian

Nursing staff are fully supported and encouraged to be creative and forward thinking and, since the Unit opened, have (with partners in the wider prison) developed and implemented for patients:
• a cancer support group
• a creative writing group
• social/recreational activities
• a healing garden
• a relaxation/yoga group
