After examining his eyes Mr Patel’s optician explained that he had cataracts, which occur when changes in the lens of the eye cause it to become less transparent, resulting in cloudy or misty vision. He referred Mr Patel to the North East London NHS Treatment Centre, in Ilford, where cataracts and other eye conditions are treated.
Mr Patel was happy when he received an appointment within two weeks and delighted when he was told his operation would be just four weeks later.
“I could not have been more impressed with the centre and the team. The nurses were polite and professional and my surgeon, Mr Ernest Onyema, explained the procedure and told me about the outcome I could expect.
“I felt no discomfort during the operation. I had been a little concerned before the day, as I think anyone would undergoing eye surgery for the first time, but I had nothing to worry about. The entire process felt as if it lasted no more than 10 minutes and then I sat in the recovery area with a cup of tea and a biscuit until my family took me home. It was all very smooth.”
The results were even better than Mr Patel had hoped. “I could not believe it. After two weeks the vision in my left eye was perfectly clear.” The team at the centre agreed. He said: “I went for my check up and the nurse delivering the eye test was amazed when I read all the lines on the chart. She told me that usually most people can’t read the last two lines after just two weeks.”
With his improved vision Mr Patel was in the unusual position of having glasses with mismatched lenses. He said: “I went back to my optician and they examined my eyes, suggesting they remove the prescription glass from the right eye and replace it with clear, leaving my left eye supported by the prescription lens.”
The suggestion worked and now Mr Patel uses his modified glasses when he is away from home. At home, he feels confident enough to go without glasses.
Mr Patel is now looking forward to having clear vision in both eyes. He said: “Mr Onyema has magic hands and I would like to thank him and the team for their excellent and caring service.”
Mr Onyema from the North East London NHS Treatment Centre said: “I am delighted to hear Mr Patel is so happy with the results of the first procedure and the team are looking forward to welcoming him back to the centre.
“Treating cataracts is a simple procedure once they have been identified. Some people may have the symptoms but not recognise the condition. They should contact their optician if they notice it becoming more difficult to see in dim or very bright light or that colours are beginning to look faded or have a yellow brownish tinge.
“They may also notice a halo effect around bright lights, such as car headlights or street lights, and that bright lights feel dazzling. If they wear glasses they may find them becoming less effective over a shorter space of time. If your optician suspects you may have a problem he can refer you to us as we only treat NHS patients.”
