Support for LGBT+ issues wins nurse national award

April 25 2019

Dedication to supporting LGBT+ prisoners across the prison estate has seen nurse Julia Waldron win a national award for her success and commitment.

The Health in Justice team (HiJ) provides healthcare for prisoners in 43 prisons and young offender institutions nationwide, and Julia’s dedication to increasing the wellbeing of the LGBT+ community within prisons saw her lift the Equality & Diversity Award at the annual Care UK Healthcare Awards.

Deputy lead nurse Julia led the HiJ team on developing policies to support LGBT+ needs in prisons. Julia attended the launch of the ‘Inside Gender Identity Report’ last year at the House of Lords and was inspired to put its findings into practice.

She used resources created by national organisations such as Stonewall to develop a comprehensive approach, embedding staff training and policies to support people facing difficulties over sexual orientation, gender dysphoria, transitioning, depression and coping with the challenges these issues can pose while in prison.

Praising Julia, the judges said her contribution to equality and diversity has had a major impact on the team’s approach to supporting patients.

Receiving the award, she said: “I am delighted to have won the award because I think it recognises our commitment to supporting our patients in the LGBT+ community. The dedication of the team and the forward thinking of managers has helped us to directly influence care in 43 prisons nationwide and improve the health and wellbeing of thousands of prisoners.”

Sarah Bromley, Medical Director of HiJ, said: “I am delighted that Julia’s dedication to LGBT+ issues has been rewarded in this way – we know the importance of excellent healthcare in prisons, and the need for it to be open equally to all.

“Julia’s work, which will support prisoners coming to terms with deeper questions about themselves and their needs and strengths, will help them to move forward positively with their lives.”

The Care UK Healthcare Awards, presented on Thursday March 28 at Lord’s Cricket Ground, celebrated excellence and were open to thousands of healthcare and support workers across the country.
