HMIRC The Verne is an Immigration and Removal Centre, based in Portland, Dorset. Care UK took over delivery of the NHS healthcare services at HMIRC The Verne on 1st April 2017.
We are the Health in Justice Market leader, providing healthcare services to those in detention and also to those in custody. Our model of care is our Wellbeing Approach – an integrated, comprehensive approach in recognition of the fact detainees are a socially-excluded group with healthcare needs which are complex and often associated with poor outcomes. It adopts the premise no single health/wellbeing factor can be taken in isolation of other motivational issues which might impact a person’s care.
Our patient group require support with a wide range of primary care needs taking into account cultural differences which are often complex and require a multidisciplinary approach. The environment can be fast paced with clinical input ranging from an emergency medical response to chronic disease management. Our service provides the opportunity to have a real impact on improving health for individuals.
To ensure the continued quality of care at HMIRC The Verne, we’re looking for Bank Staff Nurses to join our team.
About the job:
Providing nursing care within an Immigration and Removal Centre is never dull or predictable. We see a variety of health issues on any one day and this provides us with challenging new experiences which are both rewarding and stimulating. We are looking for a Bank Primary Care Nurse to enhance our nursing team. The role requires you to be a trained RGN who potentially has previous experience of the A&E environment as well as minor injuries. We would actively encourage nurses with a special interest in blood borne viruses and sexual health and those with experience in managing long term conditions. We provide a seven day a week, 24 hour service with a variety of shifts available to suit you.
- To plan, implement and evaluate the delivery of high-quality nursing care to the detainee population
- To promote health and well-being within the prisoner population
- Be an effective member of the health care team
- Support and make a professional contribution to the development of nursing/healthcare through case conferences.
You will be a qualified Registered Nurse (Adult) / RGN with a real passion for utilising all of your clinical skills in an environment that is ever changing.
If you are self-motivated and able to work autonomously as well as showing plenty of initiative when it comes to handling a wide range of situations, then this could be the right role for you!

This is a Bank role, to cover shifts on an ad-hoc basis as and when required - holiday, sickness etc. The rate of pay is a flat rate of £16.50 per hour.
